A credential evaluation is always required for an applicant who is foreign educated and the credentialing agency must determine equivalency to a U.S. graduate. Currently, ICA, ICD, FCCPT, and IERF have approved credential evaluation services. This list may change in the future so an application package will give you the most current information on all aspects of N.J. licensure requirements.

TOEFL is required for an applicant who is foreign educated with a passing score of 220. N.J. still has an open book law exam that is part of the application.

N.J. requires that anyone who completes their P.T. education after 1/1/03 must have a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy.

Any foreign-educated applicant must have 50 credits in general education with a required one-semester course in Physics and Chemistry.

As of 2/17/03 N.J. no longer issues a temporary license. A social security number is required for permanent licensure in N.J. A criminal history record check is also required for N.J.

Jurisprudence exam for all. All foreign-trained applicants must take the English tests and make the scores required by the Board. There are no exceptions or exemptions from the requirement that you take the tests. For foreign graduates English proficiency:

Depending on your visa status, you may need to go through a prescreening process as required by the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly INS) before applying for a license in Texas. To determine whether you need to get a “health care worker certificate,” contact your attorney, or check the DHS website. if you need this certificate, the board will accept certificates from either the Foreign Credentialing Commission on Physical Therapy (FCCPT), or the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).

Utah does NOT have reciprocity or endorsement with any other state for Physical Therapy. The individual must meet Utah’s requirements.

Utah law and rule examination are a page in the application to be completed as the individual fills out the application and is submitted with the application.

Graduation from a CAPTE Accredited program ONLY deficiencies in humanities, social sciences and liberal arts may be made up at any college or university. if the individual is deficient in anything else they must matriculate back into a college or university and get a degree in physical therapy. AFTER the education meets the accredited requirement s, the individual may apply for examination/ licensure by submitting a completed application with the application fee (please note the web ABC page where it says “July 1, 2003 application fee increase” as all applications are not yet updated), have FCCPT submit an original copy of the evaluation report and original transcripts documenting any deficiencies. We will then review to approve for the examination. Upon completing the
examination we issue the license.
